First Time PRS Shooter
If you are interested in or going to your first PRS match, here are some helpful tips and suggestions

Equipment requirements for participating in the Bolt Gun Nation Precision Rifle Competitions
The following is a list of gear you will need to shoot a match. Any rifle capable of holding around an inch
a 100 yards will be sufficient. Heavier Guns and smaller calibers can also be advantageous, however,
shoot the gun you have now if it meets the minimum. Your first few matches will be about learning how
to play the game and find targets, and less about the gear.
- Required Gear
- Rifle
- Any rifle in good condition
- A detachable box magazine will work best (10-12 rounds is best)
- Scope
- First Focal plane will work best, but any scope that can be dialed will be
adequate

- Ammo
- .308 caliber or less and speed less than 3200 feet per second
- Should be supersonic to 1200 yards+
- Bring a minimum of 70 (Del Norte) or 60 (Zia) but its nice to have extras in case of
a reshoot, or pre-match zero, or practice.
- Bipod
- Prone stages will require front support
- Ear Protection
- Eye protection
- D.O.P.E for the rifle to 1200 yards
- Tabular data is fine, as well as phones apps or dedicated ballistic solvers
- Food and Water
- Bring food and water to get you through the day. You will shoot better when hydrated. It can be very hot and dry on the range.
- Rifle
- Optional Gear (Most competitors will help the new shooters out and let them borrow support
gear and binoculars. This will help you choose equipment down the road as well.- Rear Bag
- Any rear support for the butt of the Gun
- Support bag
- Most competitors will use a front sandbag to help stabilize while on props
- Binoculars
- Sling
- Very rarely do we have classic NRA unsupported positions

- Pack
- This should really be considered required. Have a plan to move all your equipment between stages.
- Spare magazine
- DOPE management tools
- Some method(s) to write down the data for the targets on the stage
- Masking tape on the forearm and a marker work well.
- Wrist coach
- Muzzle break or suppressor
- Rear Bag
